Stillen classic lip install

Post by knight_yyz on Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:43 am

Hey guys just wondering what you guys think is the best way to do this. I need to paint my bumper, it looks like hell. I'm hoping to get the stillen front lip. It is original color non painted. Can the bumper be painted off the car and installed? Should I install the lip then get both painted at same time? Just need to know because I can't be without the car. I may just install and leave it unpainted if it doesn't look like crap against the gloss black car.

For a good quality job, you'd want the front bumper painted while it is off the car without the lip. Otherwise you will get cracking as paint will overlap grooves and spaces between the lip and the fenders. Also you risk overspray with the bumper on and more masking is involved.

Ya I would get it painted when the lip is off the car, I got mine done like that and it didn't turn out so well. They will have to brace the Stillen lip from the inside as they are applying the Flex Primer and Paint.

ok, so best thing is to put on the lip so you already have the holes... then remove it and the bumper cover. Have the cover and lip painted separately. Install the cover and then the lip?

best method to do it.....

1.test mount and prep the lip
2. remove lip and paint them seperately (lip off the bumper)
3. Get them painted at the same shop with the SAME BATCH OF PAINT to prevent intensity/value issues
4. once all dried and cured, mount lip to bumper.

you have a dark car so the paint will be easy to match. #3 is mainly for people with light colours like my next to impossible to match sunlit sand.

cool, thanks guys. How much should the painting cost for both pieces? I haven't had paint done on a car for ages so I am out of the loop on cost

Good quality job your probably looking at $200 or so for the lip and $400-$500 for the bumper. However this is based on me doing work seperate before so I'm sure for $500 you can get the bumper and lip done. I paid about $200 or $250 to get my lip painted and the quality is really good. Numerous scrapes and no cracking or peeling what so ever.

Not sure as the 5.5 lip is different but I'm sure the sides are the same.

Mine is mounted with two screws on the side of the lip that hooks onto the side of the bumper. I also have 3 low black screws in the front inside of the piece that goes into the lower air duct to ensure security. You don't see these screws unless you really stare at it.

I think you should use Velcro to mount your lip Ray and then drive by my house very slowly (I'll make sure there is a 2x4 to drive over) with a little luck on my part your lip may drop off as your driving bye and I won't have to go out and buy one.

does anyone know where I can buy 3m adhesion promoter? It comes in a little 2.5cc package. No one will sell me just a few. They want to sell me a box of 25. part number 06396

Finally got the tape, and I'm picking up my elastomeric paint and clear coat on Friday.

I only used teh 3m double sided tape and screws on the side as Kevin mentioned. That should hold just fine.

One question though: How do you get the driving lights out without removing the stillen lip?
