Transmission Issue

Post by makaveli on Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:50 pm

Hey guys, hope everyones enjoying these beautiful HOTT days. So my 2001 maxima 5 speed 3.0 litre is making some wierd ass noises. I just got my suspension installed so i've been really paranoid on hearing random noises, so now that everythings installed and i got an alignment, i hear this humming noise, when im cruising w/o any gas being given in any gear. I put the clutch in and the humming is gone. So its obv. coming from the transmission, but like %$%$ i dont wanna go through with it. Has anyone had any issues like this in the past with a manual transmission.

for ex.

Im driving at 60km/h, notice a stop sign, down shift to 3rd. slowing down, no gas being given and all you hear is this humming/knocking kind of noise. It'll only go away if I give gas to put the clutch in/neutral.

I recently already have done a transmission fluid replacement, im thinking of doing another one. I put in 75w90 synthetic gear oil, compliant w/ w/e the maxima needs.

Thanks for reading, feel free to give me advice/tips

Thanks guys.

DJ is having this problem right now. I'm sure he can help you out more when he sees this. All I know is he's getting his tranny replaced because of the humming noise. However, I'm not so certain you have to go to that extreme as I and others think it may just be a worn bearing.

It's probably the clutch throwout bearing. I have the same noise. The bearing doesn't last as long as the clutch which is really a PITA. I'll need a new clutch soon and I'll replace the bearing at the same time.

it's been making the same sound for about a year now, Just don't feel like spending the money to fix it until the clutch blows.

Hey, this is what came to my mind!!

The transmission is on the drivers side of the car, the noise is coming from the passenger side....sooo what about the drive shaft? im thinking maybe it could be out of place or something, if i come to a point to get a pass. drive shaft? where would the best place be.? and how much?...

Hey man

Yeah it definitely sounds like I have a very similar problem. Quite a few people thought it was the clutch throwout bearing on my car as well, but some pretty experienced people (ie Vic Simone) determined that the sound was not related to my clutch-if it was, the sound would disappear when the clutch was partially pressed in, but for my sound to go away the clutch has to be pushed in completely. One guy thought it was my driveshaft as well, but Vic was sure that it was my transmission. The sound is realllllly nasty and annoying, sounds like I'm driving a POS (the only reason I'm working to get it fixed now, otherwise the car is driveable, so I'm taking my time with the repair). Try having someone listen in the hood and one person push the clutch..make sure the sound is coming from the passenger side if u think that's what it is. It's quite clear that it's my transmission because even at idle without the car moving, you definitely hear the sound 10x more with the clutch released, and I can actually place my hand on the transmission and feel the vibrating. I've gotten estimates on rebuilding my tranny but most people suggest against it b/c I could get a replacement one for muchh cheaper and once I tear open the tranny, chances are that there are going to be many different things to replace, so it should be much more cost efficient to just get a proper working tranny. So far prices in total including my new clutch and tranny and labour is approaching $2k :s. I'm not happy at all, I COULD just drive with the sound, but it's all I hear from my car now, especially being an owner that pays attention to every sound I hear.

Just a side note... I've been saying clutch throwout bearing but I think the correct term is pilot bearing or input shaft bearing.

So i tried to narrow down the issue by, jacking the car up, and accelerating between gears, w/ the front end in the air. NO noises nothing occurred. The car has be on the ground in order for this to occur. I dont know what it might be, drive shaft didn't make any kind of sound while up in the air.

From what I have read on the org, the best bet is to get a raxle. Not sure where to get them though.

I had an axle sent from rockauto.com. Great price and I've got no problems so far.
